Holding such beliefs increases the likelihood of engaging in sexting (Wood et al., 2015); in fact, it is said to be one of the strongest factors in young people’s decision to participation (Walrave et al., 2015). Teens themselves believe that the attention given to sexting, including through media coverage, influences their tendency to participate, by making them think it is a normal practice (Smith et al., 2014). However, despite the seemingly increasing normalization of sexting among teens and young people (Wood et al., 2015), with prevalence rates generally below 32%, it cannot be considered a normative practice (Van Ouytsel et al., 2015). Similarly, seven out of the eight reviewed articles found a relationship between sexting behaviors and anxiety symptoms. Chaudhary et al. [40] found a significant relationship between youth who sexted and anxiety symptoms and argue that their results might be contrary to other findings due to the young age of the participants.

When sexting meets phone sex

Young people don’t always know that what they’re doing can, in fact, be illegal and that the ramifications for these actions lead to criminal prosecution. In the case of third-party forwarding of sexts, this could also mean a greater risk of sexting messages being disseminated non-consensually over the course of adolescence (Ringrose et al., 2013). Thus, educational efforts should be made to promote sexual education early on (Ahern et al., 2016; Gámez-Guadix et al., 2017). Although sexting is less frequent among very young or preteen boys and girls, negative outcomes are more common in these groups (Englander, 2019). Specifically, in Spain, few articles have analysed sexting prevalence, differentiating between specific types of sexting behaviours. Villacampa (2017) found that 7.9% of 489 youths aged between 14 and 18 had produced content of this type, whereas Gámez-Guadix et al. (2017) found that the prevalence for sending sexts in 3,223 youths aged 12 to 17 years was 13.5%.

Once again, the crime of sexting may be charged as either misdemeanor charges or a felony, dependent on the nature of the sexually explicit content, as well as the age of the sender and recipient.
